It works on a local level. Just look at Comcast. They rmgroup'ed everything

That doesn't count. Dumping newsgroups altogether is not the same thing.
My ISP simply is going to shut off their news server and discontinue paying
their upstream provider, thus pocketing more of the money I pay them each
month for my account.

That's what happens when you go from being the best little ISP (started by a
woman, no less), selling yourself out to a corporation in Oregon who doesn't
give a crap about anything but taking your money. We used to get shell
access, telnet, newsgroups, oh, and 10 MB of web space all for one low
price. No more web space, no shell access. Curse them!
